rules of reenactment!!
| Vietnam war reenactment is a very big concept,
the operations you will conduct range from search and destroy sweeps to
manning battalion forwards! It is because of the wide variety of
operations that you can conduct I feel that it is important to have
some basic rules to be sure that you can enjoy your reenactment.
Authenticity: First of all you'll want to be as authentic as possible, most of the reenactment groups really live up to that because it's more realistic when you look and act just like a Vietnam war grunt (see authenticity standards). when you have this basic kit you can already start your reenactment but I really advise you to keep looking for those little things that make your look better, like bug juice, field towels etc... .An other thing what is important, make sure that your kit is real, that you don't have any replica items, or that you don't use anything modern. only period jewelry and watches are allowed!!! Web gear: Again it's best to be as authentic as possible, the best way by doing that with your field gear is by using used gear. An other important thing of your web gear is that you must wear it in the same fashion the grunts did, because this adds realism. (There are many books in which you can pick up some good ideas) Naturally it is also important that you compose your webbing in such a way that works best with you, but when you spent some time in the field you will soon adjust your gear in the best possible way!! Bivouac: Because the Wolfhounds mostly operated out of battalion forwards you will most of the time be able to sleep in the limited protection of a sandbagged poncho shelter within the wire of a battalion forward, but some times you will have to sleep in the field with nothing but jungle around!!! As sleeping gear you will only need a poncho and a liner but a sleeping mattress is optional, it might be better if you don't like to sleep on the ground. But remember, the more you bring the more you have to hump around!!! C-Rations: As you will probably know the authentic rations from the Vietnam war aren't all that good to eat anymore! But you can create your own replica c-rations. To do this you will only need a canned meal that you like and paint it green except for the up-side of the can because otherwise the paint might get into your food which could lead to poisoning!! When you have some time you can warm the rations up but normally you won't have time for that during a mission so that's something for base camp. A last tip: when you go out in the field, make sure you have enough rations with you because all that working makes you hungry!! Water: The most important item in the Vietnam war grunt's field gear. You just can't carry enough with you on an operation!! grunts would carry up to 4 canteens with them filled to the brim, I suggest you do the same. Naturally every grunt carries everything he wants including the amount of water of his choice as long as he carries the items his superiors want him to carry. Communication and vehicles: any period vehicles are allowed to be used in the reenactment, as long as they where already in use in '67!! For communications, prc10 and prc 25 radios are preferable. But some other means of communications are also allowed!! Operations and battles: In this reenactment group the battles will be fought with airsoft rifles because blank firers are really hard to find over here and because airsoft adds an other dimension to the reenactment, it really becomes a battle. Pyrotechnics can and will also be used to add even more realism. this goes from smoke grenades to simulated hand grenade explosions and mortar explosions. Because the battles are mostly fought in close range it is pretty easy to determine if you're shot or not. When you are, just lay down and play dead until the battle ends. If you are wounded wait for the doc to come and help you, off course for this to work we count on you honesty and will to play your role well . The enemy will also use booby traps such as trip wires and "pungi sticks" naturally not the real thing but simulations. (For example a pit in the ground covered up with camouflage, when you step into this pit you are wounded and out of action). But you will learn all this first hand when you spent some time in the field!!! And the most important rule of them all: HAVE FUN!!!!!!!!!!!
